The mayor of the troubled Theunissen-based Masilonyana Local Municipality in the Free State has been arrested for incitement to violence.

According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the mayor, Dimakatso Modise, was arrested for inciting violence which took place in Apriland June 2021. Modise has already appeared in Theunissen Magistrate's Court and was granted bail of R2000. So far, five people including the mayor have been arrested in connection with with an incident that took place in Makeleketla township near Winburg. A house belonging to the parents of the then-mayor, Kunatu Stephen Koalane, was set alight amidst protests in the area. Thakeng says the case against the mayor was postponed until Thursday, 19 May for further investigation, during which time she will appearing with the other four suspects.
 
During the unrest, no one was reported injured but it was reported that the protesters petrol-bombed a police nyala. Following the unrest, at least eleven people were arrested in connection with the unrest.
 
During these arrests at least nine protesting irate residents were arrested during the violent protests and later released on bail of R500 each. The protests erupted after the venue of the Freedom Day celebrations, where President Cyril Ramaphosa was expected to deliver a keynote address, was in a twist of events changed had relocated to Botshabelo outside Bloemfontein.
 
The other suspects include former Speaker, Diphapang Maselo.
